Summary
- Oman generated 42,873.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity through September 2026, up 4.2% year-on-year.
- Muscat governorate led with a 206.6% jump, while North and South Sharqiyah fell 17.4%.
- Rising generation signals stronger energy demand for utilities, generators and power buyers across the sultanate.
The latest
Oman's total electricity production reached about 42,873.4 gigawatt-hours by the end of September 2026, a 4.2% increase on the 41,164.9 GWh recorded in the same period of 2025, according to preliminary statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information. Water output moved the other way, slipping 1.7% over the same nine months.
Details
- The headline figure: Preliminary data published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information put total electricity production at 42,873.4 gigawatt-hours through September 2026, against 41,164.9 GWh a year earlier. The 4.2% gain covers the first nine months of the year and was reported by the Oman News Agency.
- Muscat's surge: The capital governorate recorded the sharpest increase of any region, with output up 206.6% to 749.6 gigawatt-hours from 244.5 GWh in the same period of 2025. The statistics bulletin did not identify which plants or projects drove the jump, nor the reasons behind it.
- Second-fastest growth: Al Dakhiliyah governorate came second, with production rising 45.4% to 3,136.7 gigawatt-hours from 2,157.2 GWh at the end of September 2025. Al Wusta followed with a 9.3% increase, reaching 141.2 GWh compared with 129.2 GWh a year earlier.
- The largest region: Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah governorates together remain by far the biggest producers, generating 26,071.2 gigawatt-hours, up 5.6% from 24,687.3 GWh. That single bloc accounts for the bulk of national output and sets the direction of the overall figure.
- The south and the north: Dhofar governorate posted a 4.5% increase to 4,811.1 gigawatt-hours from 4,601.8 GWh, while Musandam was close to flat, rising 0.7% to 436.6 GWh against 433.7 GWh at the end of September 2025.
- The one decline: North and South Sharqiyah governorates were the only regions to contract, with combined output falling 17.4% to 7,090.6 gigawatt-hours from 8,587.8 GWh in the same period last year. The bulletin gave no explanation for the drop.
- Net production: Net electricity production, which includes purchases from the Oman Power and Water Procurement companies, rose 4.4% to 41,721.4 gigawatt-hours through September 2026, compared with 39,973.6 GWh a year earlier, slightly outpacing the growth in gross output.
- Water output: Total water production fell 1.7% to about 374,308.2 thousand cubic metres by the end of September 2026, down from 380,810.5 thousand cubic metres in the same period of 2025, reversing the direction seen on the electricity side.
- Water by governorate: Dhofar was the outlier on water, rising 3.7% to roughly 59,418.4 thousand cubic metres from 57,273.4 thousand. Muscat fell 5.4% to about 144,959.0 thousand cubic metres from 153,297.9 thousand, while the remaining governorates declined 0.2% against 170,239.2 thousand cubic metres.
Between the lines
The national 4.2% rise is driven less by the eye-catching Muscat percentage than by Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah, whose 5.6% gain added more than 1,380 gigawatt-hours in absolute terms. Muscat's 206.6% increase sits on a small 2025 base of 244.5 GWh, and the 17.4% contraction in the Sharqiyah governorates offsets a large part of the national gain.
What's next
The National Centre for Statistics and Information typically updates these series as full-year figures are compiled, which will show whether Muscat's increase holds and whether the Sharqiyah decline continues through December 2026.
